Barter Black Basic Branding

A bartering platform built by and for Black entrepreneurs needed a brand that felt as welcoming and energizing as the community it was designed to serve. Barter Black needed a visual identity that said professional, modern, and built for growth.

Client Need

Barter Black was born out of necessity. When the pandemic forced a pivot, the founder looked around at the Black entrepreneurial community and saw a gap: there was no dedicated space where Black business owners could come together, support each other, and exchange goods and services without overextending their budgets. Barter Black became the answer, a bartering platform where members trade using Barter Bucks, with added community features including a wellness mirror for entrepreneurs, a monthly grant list, member spotlights, and a podcast platform for members to establish authority in their industries.

The audience is primarily Black women between 25 and 50, creative and ambitious, either running their businesses full time or building something on the side. They believe in community over competition and want a platform that reflects that energy back at them.

The existing brand had been leaning on a dark gradient treatment that no longer matched where the platform was headed. The goal was to evolve the identity into something that felt more like a welcoming freelancer marketplace, modern, fresh, and full of possibility, without losing the brand equity already built.

Solution

We refreshed the Barter Black visual identity starting from their existing logo assets and established brand colors. The signature green palette was retained as the brand’s foundation and evolved into a system that feels lighter, more open, and more inviting. The updated approach moves away from the heavy gradient treatment toward a cleaner, more modern application of the brand’s core colors that still feels distinctly Barter Black.

Typography and supporting brand elements were selected to reinforce the platform’s dual identity: professional enough to be taken seriously as a business tool, approachable enough to feel like a community home. The result is a brand system built to grow with the platform across web, social media, and marketing materials.
